Double Board

A poker format in which two separate sets of community cards are dealt, creating two independent pots that are contested simultaneously.

Overview

Double Board is a variant of poker, most commonly seen in Omaha games (e.g., Double Board Pot Limit Omaha), but occasionally in No-Limit Hold'em cash games or home games. In this format, two separate boards (sets of community cards) are dealt. Each board is independent, and players play their hole cards against each board to form the best possible hand. The pot is typically split equally between the winner of each board; if a player wins both boards, they scoop the entire pot.

Gameplay

In a Double Board hand, the action proceeds as usual through pre-flop betting. After the flop, two flops are dealt (e.g., flop A and flop B). Additional betting rounds occur, and then the turn and river are each dealt as separate cards for each board (so two turn cards and two river cards). At showdown, each player's hand is evaluated against each board independently. The best hand on Board A wins half the pot, and the best hand on Board B wins the other half. If the same player wins both, they take the entire pot. Ties on a board split that half.

Strategy Considerations

  • Hand Selection: Hands that have high scoop potential (i.e., can win both boards) are more valuable. In Omaha, this often means hands with coordinated suits and connected ranks that can flop well on multiple textures.
  • Split Pot Awareness: Since the pot is divided, players must consider that winning only one board may result in a break-even or loss after rake. Therefore, chasing draws on one board while weak on the other is often unprofitable.
  • Adjusting to Opponents: Some players overestimate their scoop chances or play too passively. Exploiting these tendencies can be profitable.

Common Formats

  • Double Board Omaha: The most popular variant, often played in cash games with Pot Limit betting. It increases action and reduces variance compared to single-board Omaha.
  • Double Board Hold'em: Less common but appears in some mixed games or as a fun variant.

Rake and Rules

Rake is usually taken from the total pot before splitting, so players should be mindful of high rake structures. Some casinos or home games may have specific rules about how the boards are dealt (e.g., flop order, or if the boards are dealt simultaneously or sequentially).

Double Board is not used in major tournament series like the WSOP Main Event, but is a popular cash game format that adds excitement and strategic depth.
