Overview

Procedure

Run It Twice is typically initiated verbally before the turn or river is dealt, after all players in the hand have agreed. The dealer then deals the necessary number of community cards to complete the board for the first run, determines the winner of that half-pot, and then reshuffles the deck (or uses a separate unused deck) to deal the second run. The same hole cards are used for both runs; only the board cards change.

Strategic Implications

Run It Twice does not change the expected value (EV) of a hand. It only reduces variance by averaging results over multiple independent trials. Players who are risk-averse or in a large pot may prefer to run it twice to smooth out short-term luck. Conversely, a player who has a strong edge or is on a short bankroll might still prefer one run to avoid giving the opponent extra chances to suck out. However, mathematically, EV remains identical regardless of how many times the pot is run.

Run It Twice is most common when one player has a made hand (e.g., top pair) and the other is drawing (e.g., flush draw). The drawing player benefits from multiple runs because they get more chances to hit, but the made hand’s EV is unchanged. Psychologically, it can reduce the emotional impact of bad beats and promote friendly game dynamics.

• Run It Once: The standard method where the entire pot is decided by one board.
• Run It Thrice: Some games allow running it three times, with each run awarding one-third of the pot.
• Run It Twice Only on All-In Calls: In many rooms, the option is only available when both players are all-in. Some cardrooms allow it on the turn or river with action remaining, but that is rare.
