PokerStars on FanDuel Absorbs Overlays

PokerStars on FanDuel has honored its guarantees through two US series that missed them, covering $1,063,762 in overlays at the Ignite Series and $686,740 at the September Dynasty Series.

The three NLHE Main Events alone had an overlay of nearly $150k. The $300 Main Event drew 860 entries and fell short of its $350,000 guarantee by $109,200. The $50 version drew 1,250 runners and fell short by $18,125, while the $1,500 High Roller had a shortfall of $21,650.

The Ignite Series launched shortly after the relaunch with a $5 million guarantee. Most of its tournaments missed their guarantees, and the operator did not reduce them during the series.

Why the Shortfalls

PokerStars returned to the US on iPoker's platform with an established brand, but it still has to attract players to new software in a ring-fenced market limited to three states. FanDuel's sportsbook and casino business gives it the backing to absorb overlays as a possible investment in market share.

Other explanations are less deliberate: guarantees set too high for current traffic, satellite schedules that did not feed the target events, an operator still learning how its player pool responds, or players who have not moved over from the previous platform. The overlay figures alone cannot show which of these applies.
