Chris Björin

Chris Björin (born Christer Björin) is a Swedish professional poker player who has been based in London, England, for much of his career. He grew up in an era when poker was still a niche pursuit in Europe, and he gradually expanded from playing a variety of local games into the American-born game of Texas Hold'em before taking his skills to tournament tables. His first recorded tournament cash came in 1989, and shortly afterward he began travelling to the United States for the bigger tournaments in Las Vegas. During those years the Scandinavian poker contingent gained a reputation as aggressive and highly skilled competitors, affectionately called "the Scandis," and Björin was one of the most prominent members of that group. His Scandinavian contemporaries included Gus Hansen of Denmark and Thor Hansen of Norway, and together they made their presence felt at international tables. For a long time Björin was the face of Swedish tournament poker, leading the way well before Martin Jacobson's 2014 WSOP Main Event victory made Sweden a household name in the poker world.

The World Series of Poker has been the stage for Björin's biggest individual achievements. He is a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, and his second bracelet came in 2000 in a $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event. Over the years he has made numerous deep runs and multiple final-table appearances at the WSOP. His highest finish in the WSOP Main Event is ninth place, and his consistent ability to cash in the game's most prestigious series has been one of the hallmarks of his career. At one point, his 51st WSOP cash moved him into eighth place on the all-time list of WSOP cashes. By July 2011, he had amassed 61 WSOP cashes, totaling more than $2.2 million in prize money. He has won titles at many of the most prestigious events in poker, including the European Poker Tour, the European Poker Championships, and the British Open in London. He has also proved himself on the American side of the Atlantic, winning events such as the Five Star World Poker Classic in Las Vegas, the Four Queens Poker Classic, and the Wynn Classic. His other United States victories include the World Poker Challenge in Reno and the US Poker Championship in Atlantic City. These titles illustrate both his adaptability and his willingness to travel extensively in pursuit of competition. Because of his results in multiple variants and formats, Björin is often described as a master of multiple poker disciplines.

One of the most remarkable features of Björin's career is its longevity. His first recorded cash dates to 1989, and he continued to add cashes into the 2020s. His recorded live tournament earnings have surpassed $5.7 million, with more than 300 documented cashes. Earlier in his career he passed the $4 million mark in tournament winnings, and by mid-2011 his live earnings already exceeded $5 million. His most recent reported cash at the time of the latest records was $12,919 on 19 October 2022. That kind of staying power is rare in professional poker, where trends and young talent constantly change the game. Björin's longevity, combined with his friendly and professional demeanor, has led many of his peers to call him one of the game's true gentlemen.

Björin is widely considered one of the most consistent and respected figures in poker. His approach is patient and conservative, with an emphasis on precise decisions and avoiding unnecessary risk. In modern poker terms, he is a classic tight-aggressive player: he enters pots with a tight preflop range, but he uses position and his deep well of experience to apply pressure after the flop, particularly in the late stages of tournaments. This style became a reference point in poker literature, and Björin is often cited as an example of disciplined, fundamentals-first play. His nickname, "the Godfather of Swedish Poker," reflects the influence he has had on younger Swedish players, many of whom grew up studying his results and his style.
