Duane Tomko

Duane 'Dewey' Tomko was born on December 31, 1946, in Glassport, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the area. He started playing cards in his teens at local pool halls, where he often won. After graduating from college, Tomko worked as a kindergarten teacher, but he continued playing poker whenever possible. Eventually, he realized that poker was more profitable than teaching, so he left his full-time job to play professionally and invested a portion of his winnings into businesses. He is now based in Winter Haven, Florida.

Tomko has made a significant mark at the World Series of Poker. He won his first WSOP bracelet in 1979 in the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em event, defeating Duanne Hammrich heads-up for $48,000. He added two more bracelets over his career, bringing his total to three. Tomko is particularly noted for his deep runs in the WSOP Main Event: he finished runner-up in 1982 (losing to Jack Straus) and again in 2001 (losing to Carlos Mortensen after slow-playing aces). He also placed third in the $5,000 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Lowball event in 2005, seventh in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship in 2006, and tenth in the same event in 2007.

Beyond the WSOP, Tomko has excelled in other major tournaments. In 2003, he finished second in the World Poker Tour's Five-Diamond World Poker Classic, earning over $550,000. He won back-to-back Grand Prix of Poker titles in 2004 and 2005, each worth $355,000, for a combined $810,000. His total live tournament earnings exceed $4.9 million, and his latest recorded cash was $3,953 in 2010. Tomko is known for his remarkable consistency, cashing in 87 events over several decades.

Tomko is widely regarded as a solid, disciplined player with exceptional hand-reading and probability skills. He emphasizes positional advantage and adjusts his strategy based on opponents, often making precise decisions on later streets. His experience allows him to remain calm under pressure, avoiding emotional swings. Fellow players respect him as a veteran who has maintained a high level of performance across different poker eras.

Outside poker, Tomko is an excellent golfer. Professional golfer Rocco Mediate once said that if he needed someone to putt for his life, he would choose Tomko. This golfing skill reflects his focus and mental toughness. Tomko also invested in business ventures, drawing on the discipline he developed as a teacher and poker professional.
