Jamie Shaevel

Jamie Shaevel is a Southern California native who built his poker career primarily in cash games at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, one of the largest poker rooms in the world. Unlike many tournament grinders, Shaevel focuses almost exclusively on cash games throughout the year. His Hendon Mob page lists just 35 total live tournament cashes dating back to 2009, averaging about two per year. He has been remarkably selective about tournament play, as he stated in a 2026 PokerNews interview: "This is the only tournament I play all year, basically." That tournament, of course, is the WSOP Main Event.

Since 2010, Shaevel has made it a tradition to play the WSOP Main Event every year (except 2020 due to COVID). His consistency is remarkable: he has cashed in the Main Event eight times, including a 100th-place finish in 2011 for $54,851. Nearly a quarter of his 35 lifetime tournament cashes have come in this single event. His deep runs have become a hallmark, and he is only three cashes away from tying the record held by Allen Cunningham and Johnny Chan for most Main Event cashes. In 2026, he achieved his best result yet, reaching Day 8 as one of the final 21 players, guaranteeing at least $325,000.

The 2026 WSOP Main Event marked a turning point for Shaevel. With 21 players remaining, he bagged 17,100,000 chips (14th out of 21) and was within striking distance of the $10 million first-place prize. Reflecting on his deep run, he told PokerNews: "It feels very different to me than every other year that I've gone deep. I'm really appreciating it more. Less stress, just being very grateful for the opportunity to be here." Unlike many players who feel immense pressure with life-changing money on the line, Shaevel remained grounded. He said, "My life won't change at all. I've got a game on Tuesday at Commerce and I'll be there either way."

Shaevel attributes his Main Event success to his cash game background. "I think it's more suitable for my cash game background where it's deeper than most tournaments. It's a slower structure," he explained. The Main Event's deep-stack, slow structure allows him to leverage the skills he hones in cash games, such as patience and post-flop play. He rarely plays other tournaments, but his focused approach has yielded impressive results. With a family at home (he is a married father of two), he views poker as a job rather than a high-variance gamble, and his calm demeanor at the tables reflects that perspective.
