Juha Helppi

Juha Helppi was born on March 4, 1977, in Turku, Finland, and currently resides in Helsinki. Before turning to professional poker, he worked as a croupier for RAY, the Finnish gambling monopoly, but never dealt poker in his role. Helppi gained early recognition in the poker world with the online alias "Jussi," though he later became known by his real name. He also played the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering competitively in his youth.

Helppi first burst onto the global scene during the early seasons of the World Poker Tour (WPT). In 2003, he won the inaugural WPT Aruba Poker Classic, defeating Kathy Liebert and Phil Gordon in heads-up play to claim a $75,000 prize. He then finished fourth in the Season 1 WPT Battle of Champions and later achieved a runner-up finish in the 2005 WPT Grand Prix de Paris at the Aviation Club de France, losing to Roland De Wolfe and earning approximately $318,528. In total, Helppi has one WPT title, two WPT final tables, and ten WPT money finishes.

On the European Poker Tour (EPT), Helppi has recorded one final table and five cashes. His most notable EPT results include a third-place finish in the €50,000 Super High Roller at EPT Prague in December 2016 ($362,523) and a fourth-place finish in the same event in December 2014 ($333,495). He also came second in the €25,000 High Roller at EPT Malta in October 2015 ($399,261).

Despite a long and consistent WSOP career dating back to 2003, Helppi did not win his first bracelet until 2019. That year, he took down Event #72: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship for $306,622. Speaking after the victory, he said, "It feels great. I’ve been coming here since 2003. This means a lot to me to win a bracelet. It’s such a long journey." He followed up in 2020 by winning his second bracelet in the WSOP Online GGPoker Event #35: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship, besting a 328-entry field for $290,286. Helppi now has two bracelets, 68 WSOP cashes, and 13 WSOP final tables. His best Main Event finish came in 2010 when he placed 86th.

Helppi's largest live cash to date is $781,500, earned as runner-up in the $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha/No-Limit Hold'em Eight Max event at the 2026 WSOP. Other major scores include a fifth-place finish in the $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Eight Max at the 2024 WSOP ($524,911), a runner-up in the 2006 WSOP $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event ($331,144), and a second-place in the Full Tilt Poker Million VIII in 2009 ($250,000). He also won the €20,000 High Roller at EPT Deauville in January 2009 for $254,598. Overall, his live tournament earnings exceed $10.9 million according to PokerNews, placing him second on Finland's all-time money list behind Patrik Antonius.

Helppi is known for a disciplined and patient approach, often characterized as a tight-aggressive (TAG) player. He emphasizes selective hand selection pre-flop and applies aggressive post-flop pressure. His deep tournament runs are attributed to his strong reading abilities, particularly in short-stacked situations, and his ability to calculate pot odds efficiently. Online, he excels at multi-tabling and making quick, accurate decisions under time pressure.

Outside of poker, Helppi is a highly accomplished paintball player. He has captained the Finnish national paintball team, the "Finnish Dream Team," to championships in 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2014, and 2022. He started playing at age 15, following his younger brother Olli, and has remained on the same team for decades. The team composition includes the Helppi brothers along with other Finnish players. Helppi has stated that paintball requires strategy, teamwork, and communication, and he enjoys the parallels between the two disciplines.

Juha Helppi is regarded as one of Finland's poker legends, alongside Patrik Antonius. His ability to transition from online success to live tournament achievements, his two WSOP bracelets, and his consistent deep runs over more than two decades have earned him respect in the poker community. Known for his humility and sportsmanship, Helppi's career serves as a model of longevity and adaptability in the game.
