Term: Tell A tell refers to unconscious physical actions, facial expressions, or behavioral patterns that a player exhibits during a hand, revealing the strength of their hand or their intentions. In practice, recognizing and exploiting opponents' tells can significantly improve hand reading, thus gaining an edge in decision-making—for example, determining whether to raise or fold. Typical scenario: a player suddenly holds their breath and leans back slightly after the flop, often indicating they hold a strong hand and are trying to suppress excitement; conversely, if they frequently glance at their chips and bet quickly, they may be bluffing.

A tell (Tell) is information unintentionally revealed by a poker player that can be read by opponents, typically manifested through body language, facial expressions, speech patterns, or betting habits. Experienced players deliberately observe opponents' tells while working to conceal their own.
Common Types
- Physical Tells: Hand tremors, rapid breathing, changes in posture (e.g., leaning forward indicates a strong hand, leaning back indicates a weak hand).
- Facial Tells: Shifty eyes, pursed lips, fake smiles, or excessive calmness.
- Vocal Tells: Rising pitch in speech, stuttering, or sudden silence.
- Betting Tells: Betting speed, chip handling style, or unusual patterns in bet sizing.
Exploitation and Countermeasures
- Exploitation: Observe an opponent's baseline behavior in specific situations (e.g., how they normally handle chips), then compare it to any abnormal actions. For example, a player who usually pushes chips out quickly but pauses for two seconds before betting may be hesitating on a bluff.
- Countermeasures: Maintain consistent behavior, or deliberately give false tells (reverse tells). For example, pretending to be nervous while holding a strong hand to induce a call from opponents.
Notes
Tells are not absolutely reliable, especially against high-level players who may deliberately act. Therefore, tells should be used as supplementary information rather than the sole basis for decisions. In online poker, tells primarily manifest as bet timing, chat content, and other digital traces.
