Ross Boatman

Ross Boatman was born on March 3, 1964, in St. Pancras, London, England, as Roscoe Maxim Boatman. Growing up in the heart of London, he developed an early interest in acting, often performing skits inspired by his favorite movies. He attended acting school and pursued a career in drama, but the income was unstable, especially at the start. To make ends meet, he worked part-time in pubs and clubs, where he was first introduced to poker. What began as a way to pass the time quickly became a passion, as he realized poker was a game of strategy and reading opponents. Boatman's acting career includes roles in films such as Cassandra's Dream (2007), Penelope (2006), and Paddington (2014). He was most frequently seen in crime dramas on television, with his most famous role being in the series Street Warriors. Despite his acting commitments, poker gradually took center stage in his professional life.

In the mid-1990s, Ross Boatman became part of The Hendon Mob, a group of four professional poker players from London: Joe Beevers, Barny Boatman (Ross's elder brother), Ram Vaswani, and Ross himself. The group's name was first publicized by the Evening Standard newspaper in September 2000. Although only Joe Beevers actually came from Hendon, the others played there regularly. The Mob gained recognition through their appearances on the televised poker program Late Night Poker (1999–2002), which helped popularize poker in the UK.

The group was highly competitive at the table, but they supported each other away from it. As Barny Boatman recalled, "Poker is an individual game. But it can be cut-throat and lonely. Having this family that you could go around with was great." They also agreed to swap 5% of their winnings to maintain liquidity within the group.

The Hendon Mob was sponsored by Prima Poker in 2004 and 2005, with $2 million worth of worldwide tournament buy-ins. They played on the Prima online poker network and challenged four-player teams of various nationalities to heads-up matches, culminating in the inaugural Prima Transatlantic Cup in 2004. The Mob won each of these international team matches until falling 3–1 to the US team of Phil Ivey, Andy Bloch, Chris Ferguson, and Paul Wolfe. After the Prima deal expired, they were sponsored by Full Tilt Poker until September 2011.

The Hendon Mob also launched a website that became the largest poker player database worldwide, collecting tournament results from around the globe. The site was acquired by the Global Poker Index in July 2013.

Ross Boatman's poker career spans decades, with numerous notable results. He won his first major title in 2003, taking the £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event at The London Open for £50,000. In 2005, he finished fourth in the PartyPoker Million V Cruise, earning $80,000. The following year, he made a deep run in the WSOP $10,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event, finishing ninth for $120,000.

In 2010, Boatman won the €2,500 No Limit Hold'em event at EPT Dublin, taking home €100,000. He continued to perform well in the 2010s, with a second-place finish in the GUKPT £500 No Limit Hold'em in Birmingham in 2008 (£18,000), a fifth-place finish in the GUKPT £1,100 Main Event in 2014 (£12,000), and a third-place finish in the £1,100 No Limit Hold'em Main Event at the UKIPT in 2016 (£25,230).

His crowning achievement came in 2021 at the World Series of Poker, where he won the $1,500 Limit Hold'em event, earning $183,240 and his first WSOP gold bracelet. This long-awaited victory was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Fans remember how Boatman kept his cool against experienced opponents and finished with a brilliant victory.

In addition to his live tournament success, Boatman has accumulated approximately $1 million in online poker earnings. His total live tournament winnings exceed $3 million, placing him among the most successful British poker players.
