4Bet from MP

4Bet from MP

Term: Middle Position 4-Bet 4Bet from MP In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, refers to the action of a player in middle position MP who, facing an open raise from an early position player followed by a 3-bet from another player, re-raises 4-bets themselves.

4Bet from MP (Middle Position 4Bet)

Position and Scenario

MP (Middle Position) usually refers to UTG+1 in a 6-handed game or one of the first two positions in a full ring game. When an MP player makes a 4Bet, it means that an early position player (e.g., UTG) has opened, a later position player (e.g., CO or BTN) or a blind player has 3bet, and the MP player chooses to 4bet with their hand.

Strategic Significance

  • Value Range: MP's 4bet usually represents a strong range, including top hands such as AA, KK, AKs, etc., because positional disadvantage requires MP to have a tighter range.
  • Bluff Range: It can also include a few bluffs, such as A5s, KQo, etc., to balance the range and exploit opponents' over-3betting.
  • Sizing: The 4bet sizing is generally 2.0-2.5 times the 3bet amount, or about 22-25% of effective stacks.

Notes

MP's 4bet exposes hand strength, and caution is needed post-flop if multiple players call. It is generally not recommended to call a 3bet with medium-strength hands; instead, choose to 4bet or fold to avoid being at a positional disadvantage post-flop.

Typical Example

Preflop: UTG raises to 3BB, CO 3bets to 9BB, MP holding AA directly 4bets to 22BB, forcing CO to call or fold.
