AF from HJ

AF from HJ

Term: Aggression Factor from Hijack AF from HJ A metric that measures the ratio of a player's betting and raising frequency to calling frequency from the Hijack position.

Overview

AF (Aggression Factor) from HJ (Hijack) refers to the aggression metric specifically calculated for that position. The Hijack is located after the Under the Gun (UTG) and before the Cutoff (CO), belonging to the middle-late positions. The AF formula is: (Number of Bets + Number of Raises) / Number of Calls. AF from HJ only counts these actions when the player is in the Hijack position.

Usage

  • High Level (AF > 3): The player bets or raises much more than they call in the Hijack, indicating aggression. However, this may mean over-bluffing or a narrow value betting range.
  • Medium Level (AF approximately 1.5–3): Balanced, able to value bet and also call appropriately.
  • Low Level (AF < 1): Passive, more calling than betting or raising. Such players in the Hijack may often call with draws or weak made hands.

Positional Impact

The Hijack has a better positional advantage compared to earlier positions (e.g., UTG), but is at a disadvantage compared to the Cutoff and Button. Therefore, a reasonable AF from HJ should be slightly higher than UTG, but lower than CO and BTN. Typical exploitative strategies:

  • Against opponents with a low AF from HJ, make more continuation bets, as they tend to fold after calling.
  • Against opponents with a high AF from HJ, consider trapping by check-raising with strong hands.

Notes

  • AF does not distinguish bet sizes; it should be analyzed in conjunction with bet sizing.
  • Statistics are unreliable with a small sample size (fewer than 20–30 hands).
  • Different game types (cash, tournaments) and opponent styles affect the reasonable range.

Example

Assume a player participated in 100 hands in the Hijack, bet 20 times, raised 10 times, and called 15 times. Then AF from HJ = (20+10)/15 = 2.0. This is medium aggression.
