Overview
BB AFq (Big Blind Aggression Frequency) is a poker statistic commonly used in HUDs (Heads-Up Displays) to measure how often a player takes an aggressive action (bet or raise) when in the big blind position. It is expressed as a percentage and provides insight into a player's aggressiveness from the big blind, which is a key position due to its disadvantage of acting first post-flop.
Calculation
BB AFq is calculated as: (Number of aggressive actions from the big blind) / (Number of opportunities to be aggressive from the big blind) × 100. An opportunity to be aggressive occurs when the player has the option to bet, raise, or check/call. If the player folds or checks, it is not counted as aggressive. Typically, only hands where the player sees a flop (or later streets) are considered; pre-flop actions are usually excluded because the big blind often faces a raise and may call or fold without a betting opportunity. However, definitions can vary by HUD software.
Typical Values
- Passive player: BB AFq below 25%. Such players often check or call rather than bet or raise from the big blind.
- Aggressive player: BB AFq above 40%. These players frequently bet or raise when given the chance, putting pressure on opponents.
- Average player: Generally between 25% and 40%. This range indicates a balanced approach, mixing checks and aggressive actions.
Interpretation
A high BB AFq suggests that the player is proactive in defense of their big blind, often leading out or raising to deny equity. This can be exploitable by opponents who may trap or check-raise more often. A low BB AFq indicates a passive style, where the player often checks and only calls. This can be exploited by frequent continuation bets and thin value bets. BB AFq is most meaningful when combined with sample size (number of hands) and other stats like BB VPIP (Voluntarily Put Money In Pot) and WTSD (Went to Showdown). For accurate interpretation, a minimum of several hundred hands is recommended.
Limitations
BB AFq does not account for the size of bets or raises, nor the context of the board texture or opponent tendencies. It is also position-specific; a player's aggression from the big blind may differ from other positions. Additionally, AFq can be inflated in multiway pots where fewer opportunities to act occur. Always consider the stat alongside other data.
