BB River Check-Call Monotone
bb-river-check-call-monotone Refers to a play where the big blind player checks and then calls an opponent's bet on the river on a monotone board flop, turn, and river all of the same suit.
Term Explanation
Position and Action
- BB: Big Blind position, forced to post a blind preflop, acts first postflop (out of position).
- River Check-Call: On the river, BB first checks, then an opponent bets, and BB calls.
- Monotone: The board has three or four cards of the same suit, e.g., A♠ K♠ 7♠ 3♠ 2♥ (if the river is not that suit, three of a suit; if the river is also that suit, four of a suit).
Strategic Principle
This play typically occurs in BB's defending range (e.g., calling a raise preflop), holding hands of medium strength that are not easily outdrawn, such as:
- Top pair with a weak kicker (e.g., K♠ Q♣ on a K♠ 7♠ 2♠ board), worried about a better King or flush.
- Small flush (e.g., 4♠ 5♠ completes a bottom flush on Q♠ J♠ T♠ 9♠), but with four suited cards on board, must still consider a larger flush.
- Two pair or trips (but the monotone board may diminish their value).
The purpose of checking:
- Pot control: Avoid being raised after leading out and forced to commit more chips.
- Induce bluffs: Give opponents a chance to bluff with air.
- Cheap showdown: If opponent checks back, see a free showdown.
Calling is based on:
- Opponent's bet sizing and frequency.
- Hand strength that beats a portion of opponent's value range and can catch bluffs.
Notes
- Monotone boards greatly change hand strength evaluation: flush completion probability is high, so even top pair requires caution.
- This play is more common when BB checks after the preflop raiser's continuation bet; a donk bet from BB on the river is rarer.
- Without a reliable read, BB should not frequently call large bets on monotone boards, as opponent's made hand probability is high.
