BTN 20bb Final Table
In a poker tournament final table situation, the player on the button holds about 20 big blinds.
Meaning
BTN 20bb Final Table describes a common situation in a tournament when it reaches the final table (usually 9 players or fewer) and the player on the button has a stack of approximately 20 big blinds. This term is often used when discussing strategic adjustments, because the payout structure (ICM) of the final table significantly affects decision-making. A 20bb stack is medium depth – neither short nor deep.
Strategic Considerations
- ICM Pressure: At the final table, players are more concerned with survival and prize money jumps rather than simply accumulating chips. Under ICM, 20bb is a flexible range: raises/re-raises commit a significant portion of the stack but still leave room to fold; however, when facing an All-in, the required equity to call becomes higher.
- Position Advantage: The button is the last to act preflop and postflop, gaining maximum information. A 20bb stack allows for a standard open-raise (2-2.5bb) and the ability to use position to c-bet or check behind postflop.
- Range Advice: Typically, the button should open a wider range against the small and big blinds (especially when they have shorter stacks), including many marginal hands to apply pressure. However, it’s important to avoid getting involved in large pots with deeper stacks while holding marginal holdings.
- Shove or Fold: When facing a 3-bet from the small or big blind, a 20bb stack usually has only two options: shove or fold. Calling a 3-bet would commit too large a portion of the stack, making postflop play awkward.
Example
Suppose the final table has 7 players remaining, the blind level is 100k/200k/200k (big blind ante), and the button has 4 million chips (20bb). All players before the button fold. The button could consider opening to 400k with any suited connectors, small pairs (e.g., 22), or Ace-high hands, aiming to steal the blinds. If the small blind is short (e.g., 8bb) and shoves, the button must decide whether to call based on the opponent’s range and ICM considerations.
Notes
Actual strategy also depends on the chip distribution of other players at the table, their tendencies, and the blind level. 20bb is a dynamic number; strategies differ significantly when the stack approaches 10bb or 30bb.
