BTN Flop 4-Bet Pot

The pot situation on the flop for the button player after a 4-bet preflop.

Overview

BTN Flop 4-Bet Pot refers to a pot on the flop involving the button (BTN) player after a 4-bet occurred preflop (i.e., the fourth raise preflop). This typically happens when one player 3-bet preflop and another player 4-bet, with the button player either initiating or calling the 4-bet. In this scenario, the pot is larger, player ranges are narrower, and position and hand strength carry more weight.

Typical Situations

  • As the 4-bet aggressor: The button player made the 4-bet preflop and continues to apply pressure on the flop. Usually holding strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) or hands with potential (e.g., AK), they can continue betting or check to control the pot from an advantageous position on the flop.
  • As the 4-bet caller: The button player called an opponent's 4-bet. They are in position on the flop, but their range may include medium-strength hands or speculative hands, requiring cautious action based on the flop texture.

Key Strategy Points

  • Narrow Range: In a 4-bet pot, player ranges are highly polarized, typically composed of value hands and bluffs. The button should leverage positional advantage on the flop: build the pot quickly with strong hands and apply pressure with bluffs.
  • Bet Sizing: With a larger pot, bets are usually between 1/3 and 2/3 pot. Avoid overbetting that allows opponents to fold easily.
  • Flop Texture: If the flop hits the button's range (e.g., high cards), bet frequently; if the flop is unfavorable (e.g., low connected cards), check more often.
  • Counter-Adjustments: Opponents in out-of-position (e.g., big blind) may have a tighter 4-bet range, so the button should avoid over-bluffing.

Example

Preflop: CO raises, BTN 3-bets, CO 4-bets, BTN calls. Flop: K♠ 7♦ 2♣. BTN holds A♣K♣, top pair top kicker, can bet half pot for value; if holding A♥Q♥, check and evaluate opponent's action.

Summary

BTN Flop 4-Bet Pot is a common scenario in high-level play, testing a player's understanding of range, bet sizing, and position. Proper response requires factoring in opponent tendencies and board texture.
