BTN Fold to 3-Bet

Refers to the frequency with which the button player chooses to fold when facing an opponent's 3-bet, usually expressed as a percentage.

Overview

BTN Fold to 3-Bet is a key statistical indicator in Texas Hold'em that measures the button player's tendency to fold when facing a 3-bet. This data is typically collected by poker tracking software (such as Hold'em Manager or PokerTracker) and reflects the frequency with which a player folds on the button when facing a 3-bet from the blinds or other positions.

Importance

In preflop decisions, the button is the most advantageous position, so players often open-raise with a wide range on the button (about 40%-60% of hands). However, when facing a 3-bet, button players need to carefully adjust their defensive range. A reasonable BTN Fold to 3-Bet value helps players balance value hands and bluffs, avoiding being overly exploited by opponents.

Typical Range

  • Very tight (Fold to 3-Bet > 65%): Vulnerable to frequent 3-bet attacks; opponents can profitably 3-bet with any two cards.
  • Moderate range (approx. 45%-60%): More balanced, protecting the opening range without folding too often.
  • Loose-aggressive (< 40%): Defends too much against 3-bets, potentially getting exploited by value-heavy 3-bets and also susceptible to 4-bet bluffs.

Exploitation Strategies

  • Against high fold-to-3-bet opponents: Increase 3-bet frequency, especially with a wide range (e.g., medium suited connectors or suited gappers) as bluffs.
  • Against low fold-to-3-bet opponents: Focus on value-heavy 3-bets, reduce bluffs, and be prepared for 4-bets or postflop battles after a call.
  • Adjust frequency: Dynamically adjust your 3-bet range based on the opponent's 4-bet tendencies and postflop skills. For example, if an opponent 4-bets frequently, reduce your 3-bet frequency and increase 4-bets or folds.

Notes

BTN Fold to 3-Bet is just one statistic; it must be analyzed in conjunction with the opponent's overall play, table dynamics, stack depth, and the opponent's 3-bet range. Relying solely on this data can lead to misjudgments, as opponents may adjust their strategy to exploit your reads.
