BTN Iso Pot Turn Strategy

BTN Iso Pot Turn Strategy

Term: BTN Iso Pot Turn Strategy A system of betting or checking decisions on the turn after entering a heads-up pot from the button via a pre-flop isolation raise.

Strategy Background

Button isolation raise is a common preflop operation in Texas Hold'em: when multiple players limp into the pot, the button player raises with a wide range, aiming to force the blinds to fold, go heads-up with the limpers, and use positional advantage to control the hand. After entering the flop, a continuation bet is typically used. This strategy focuses on subsequent actions on the turn (fourth community card).

Core Principles

  • After flop continuation bet: If the flop bet is called, the turn action should continue to attack or fold based on board texture, opponent type, and your own range.
  • Range advantage: Since the button's preflop raising range is wide and often leads over limpers (who usually have weak hands), high-frequency betting (about 60%-75%) is still feasible on the turn, especially when the turn is a blank.
  • Check-call or check-raise: When the turn significantly improves the opponent's range (e.g., completing a straight or flush) or when your hand strength is weak, consider checking to control the pot; if holding a draw or medium-strength hand, combine with check-raise bluffs.

Typical Application Scenarios

  • Favorable turn: For example, flop is K♠7♦2♣, turn is 4♦ (blank). The button can bet with all top pair or better value hands, while continuing to bluff with some draws (e.g., A♥5♥).
  • Unfavorable turn: Flop is J♥T♥5♦, turn is Q♠ completing many straights. Reduce betting frequency, especially when the opponent has a strong straight range.
  • Against calling stations: Against opponents with high call frequencies, reduce bluff proportion and only bet with strong hands.

Notes

  • This strategy needs to be adjusted based on specific opponent tendencies; there is no absolute standard.
  • When necessary, use a delayed continuation bet on the turn (check flop, bet turn) to balance your range.
