BTN Raise C-Bet

BTN Raise C-Bet

Term: BTN Raise C-Bet Refers to the action of a player on the button raising an opponent's continuation bet C-Bet on the flop or turn.

Button Raise C-Bet (BTN Raise C-Bet)

Meaning and Background

BTN Raise C-Bet is a common and aggressive play in Texas Hold'em, typically occurring on the flop or turn. The Button (BTN) is the last to act preflop, holding a positional advantage. When the preflop raiser makes a continuation bet (C-Bet) on the flop, the Button player can choose to raise to counter.

Usage Scenarios and Purposes

  • Protecting Hand: When the Button holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair or better), raising immediately builds the pot and pressures opponents, forcing them to fold draws or weaker made hands.
  • Bluff or Semi-Bluff: Using positional advantage, the Button can raise with draws (e.g., straight draw, flush draw) or air, forcing opponents to fold the pot or securing a free card on later streets (if opponent calls, further manipulation is possible with position on later streets).
  • Countering Overly Aggressive Opponents: Against a preflop raiser who frequently C-Bets, the Button adjusts by raising, reducing the opponent's C-Bet frequency and disrupting their balance.

Considerations

  • Opponent Range Reading: Evaluate the preflop raiser's range. If the opponent is tight-aggressive (TAG) and the flop structure favors them, their C-Bet may represent a strong hand; raising cautiously. If the opponent is loose-aggressive (LAG) or C-Bets too frequently, raising is more valuable.
  • Flop Structure: Raises are more effective on flops that coordinate well with the Button's range (e.g., wet boards or with high cards); on dry boards, consider the possibility of the opponent holding a very strong hand.
  • Stack Depth: With deeper effective stacks, raising creates more room for maneuver; with short stacks, raising may lead to an all-in, requiring pot odds assessment.

Typical Example

Preflop, the Button calls or raises, then enters the flop. The flop comes K♠ 8♥ 3♦. The preflop raiser (middle position) bets 70% of the pot. The Button holds A♠ K♣ (TPTK) or J♠ T♠ (flush draw) and chooses to raise to 2.5x to extract value or apply pressure.
