C-Bet from UTG
Concept
C-Bet from UTG refers to a continuation bet made on the flop after a player raised preflop from the UTG (Under the Gun) position, which is the first to act in a 9-handed table. Due to UTG's disadvantageous postflop position (acting first postflop with many players behind), this bet usually represents a strong range, but can also be part of a balancing strategy.
Typical Strategy
- Range characteristics: UTG's preflop raising range is usually tight, including high pairs (AA-QQ), big high cards (AK-AQ), and some medium/small pairs. The frequency of continuation bets postflop depends on board structure and opponent tendencies.
- Dry board: On low unconnected boards (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), UTG can c-bet frequently, leveraging range advantage to pressure opponents.
- Wet board: On straight or flush draw boards (e.g., J-T-9 two-tone), continuation bets should be cautious as opponents may have draws or made hands; consider checking to control the pot.
- Multiway pot: If multiple players call, the c-bet frequency should be reduced to avoid being exploited by draws or made hands raising.
Notes
The weakness of the C-Bet from UTG is the positional disadvantage. If opponents fold frequently, increase betting frequency; if opponents fight back with raises, adjust to a stronger range. A balanced approach is to mix in checks, slow-playing strong hands or bluffing with weak hands, to counter observant opponents.
