Chip Up

Chip Up

In poker, to chip up means to increase one's chip stack, typically by purchasing more chips (in cash games) or by accumulating chips from opponents (in tournaments).

Overview

"Chip up" is a common poker phrase referring to the act of increasing your chip stack. The term can be used in different contexts depending on the game format.

In Cash Games

In cash games, chipping up often involves buying more chips from the dealer or casino. This is also known as "reloading" or "adding on." Players may chip up to cover larger bets, maintain a healthy stack relative to the table, or take advantage of a favorable situation. For example, if a player loses a big pot and their stack shrinks, they might chip up to stay competitive. Some cash games have a maximum buy-in, so chipping up beyond that limit is not allowed.

In Tournaments

In tournaments, chipping up refers to growing your chip stack through winning hands, stealing blinds, or accumulating chips from eliminated players. Unlike cash games, you cannot simply buy more chips (except during specific rebuy or add-on periods). Therefore, chipping up is a key strategic goal: the bigger your stack, the more pressure you can put on opponents, and the more hands you can survive through blind increases. A player who consistently chips up is often a threat to make a deep run. The opposite—losing chips—is sometimes called "chipping down."

Strategic Considerations

Chipping up is not just about winning pots; it also involves managing risk. In tournaments, doubling up early can give you a comfortable cushion, allowing you to play more speculative hands. However, trying to chip up too aggressively can backfire if you run into a monster hand. Skilled players balance opportunities to chip up with solid fundamental strategy, including hand selection, position, and reading opponents.
