Clock Call
Clock Call
Term: Clock Call Refers to a player or dealer requesting that a timer be used for the current hand, forcing the active player to make a decision within a limited time to prevent intentional stalling.
Clock Call
Overview
"Clock Call" is a common rule in live poker tournaments used to maintain the pace of play. When a player takes an excessively long time to act, and other players or the dealer believe it has become an undue delay, they can request a "clock call" to the dealer or floor staff. Once accepted, the floor will start a countdown timer, typically giving the player about 30 seconds to 1 minute to act. If the time expires, the hand is automatically declared dead (folded).
Applicable Scenarios
- A player is taking too long on a critical decision (e.g., river decision, all-in situation).
- Opponents suspect the player is deliberately stalling to affect emotions or avoid action.
- The tournament is in a hand-for-hand or bubble phase where the pace needs to be accelerated.
Procedure Rules
- Any player not involved in the current hand or the dealer can call the clock, but priority usually goes to other players still in the hand.
- Once the floor arrives, they will verbally announce "clock is on" and clearly state the remaining time.
- If the player acts within the time limit, the hand continues. If time expires, the hand is automatically folded, and the player may receive a warning or penalty (e.g., a forced blind, sit-out).
Strategic Considerations
Calling the clock is a legitimate tactic but should be used judiciously. Frequent clock calls may be seen as disrespectful or disruptive to the game atmosphere, and can cause friction in friendly games. Professional players typically use it only when they are certain the opponent is intentionally stalling, rather than to apply pressure.
Tournament Variations
Different tournaments have slight variations in time limits, who can call the clock, and penalty rules. For example, the WSOP usually gives 30 seconds plus a 5-second extension. Some tournaments allow the same player to call the clock multiple times on the same hand.
