Cutoff Continuation Bet CO C-Bet
Overview
CO C-Bet refers to a player who raised or entered the pot from the Cutoff (CO) position preflop and then makes the first bet on the flop. Since the CO position is after the under-the-gun positions and before the button, it enjoys relative positional advantage, but must still act after players in later positions postflop.
Strategic Significance
- Leveraging Positional Advantage: The CO position can observe the actions of earlier players postflop, but still has the button (BTN) and blinds yet to act. Therefore, the C-Bet needs to balance value and bluffs.
- Range Advantage: The CO player's preflop raising range is typically wider than earlier positions but slightly narrower than the button. A CO C-Bet can represent a strong hand, or serve as a semi-bluff or pure bluff, forcing opponents to fold.
- Frequency and Sizing: Generally, the CO C-Bet frequency should be higher than under-the-gun but lower than the button. On dry boards (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), high-frequency betting is viable; on wet boards (e.g., T-9-8 suited), caution is needed. Common bet sizes range from 1/3 to 2/3 of the pot.
Considerations
- Button Threat: After a CO C-Bet, the button player may counter with a raise or call. Therefore, adjustments should be made based on the button's tendencies.
- Blind Defense: Blind players may defend with a wide range. If the C-Bet is raised or called, evaluate the opponent's range and plan subsequent streets.
- Preflop Raising Range: The CO raising range usually includes strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) and suited connectors. When C-Betting, differentiate betting strategies for different hand types.
