CO River C-Bet

CO River C-Bet

Term: CO River C-Bet Refers to the action where a player, after raising from the cutoff CO preflop, bets again on the river.

Usage

CO River C-Bet is a specific application of the continuation bet (C-Bet) strategy on the river, applicable only when the player is in the cutoff position (CO, i.e., the position two to the right of the big blind). The term emphasizes the combination of position and street, typically describing a scenario where the preflop raiser continues to attack on the river.

Strategic Significance

A river continuation bet is more unique compared to flop or turn c-bets, as all community cards are now dealt and hand values become clearer. The CO position on the river offers a positional advantage, allowing players to observe opponents' actions before deciding. CO River C-Bet is typically used in the following situations:

  • Holding a strong hand to extract maximum value from opponents' calling ranges.
  • As a bluff, exploiting the high fold equity on the river to force opponents to fold medium-strength hands.
  • To balance your range, maintaining a reasonable ratio of strong hands to bluffs to prevent being easily exploited by opponents.

Considerations

  • A river continuation bet requires careful consideration of board texture, opponent ranges, and bet sizing. For example, when the board has high potential for straights or flushes, the risk of bluffing increases.
  • Since the CO player raised preflop, opponents may perceive their range as strong, making river c-bets more likely to command respect. However, be aware that opponents may exploit this with check-raise bluffs.
  • Typical bet sizing is around 50%-75% of the pot, adjusted based on board dynamics.
  • Unlike flop or turn c-bets, the ratio of value bets to bluffs on the river should lean more toward value bets, as opponents' willingness to fold is generally highest on the river.
