Background

In Texas Hold'em, a squeeze usually occurs preflop or on the flop when multiple players have entered the pot. A player makes a large raise to profit from dead money in the pot and opponents' fold equity. However, a river squeeze is relatively rare because only one street remains, the pot is larger, and players are more inclined to value bet or bluff.

Strategy Application

When the CO player faces a bet and at least one call (or raise) on the river, and the board becomes paired, he may choose to squeeze-raise. The logic behind this play is:

• A paired board may reduce opponents' nut combos (e.g., an opponent who originally had one pair now finds their hand weakened by the paired board), increasing the feasibility of a bluff.

• Squeeze-raising on the river is high-risk because opponents have already invested significant chips and are less likely to fold.
