The key distinction of a cold 5-bet is that the player making the action has not yet put any chips into the pot (other than possibly the big blind); they are "cold" entering the pot and directly making a 5-bet.
Typical Scenarios
- An UTG player raises, a middle-position player 3-bets, the button player 4-bets, and then the small blind player directly 5-bets. The small blind player has not called or raised previously, so this is a cold 5-bet.
- Alternatively, an UTG player raises, a middle-position player calls, the button player 3-bets, the UTG player 4-bets, and then the middle-position player (who previously called) makes a 5-bet. This is not a cold 5-bet because he has already put in a call.
Strategic Implications
A cold 5-bet usually represents extreme hand strength, as a player suddenly makes a large raise without having invested any chips. This indicates a willingness to commit a significant number of chips from a disadvantageous position (e.g., the blinds) and forces the original raiser and the 4-bettor to make tough decisions. In most cases, the range for a cold 5-bet is very narrow, typically consisting only of AA, KK, and sometimes AKs.
Considerations
