Condensed Range

Condensed Range

Term: Condensed Range Refers to a player's hand range that is narrow and typically consists of hands of similar strength in specific situations such as small pots or passive action lines, lacking polarized hands.

Overview

A condensed range is a type of hand range in Texas Hold'em that describes the possible hands a player might hold, contrasting with a [polarized range]. When a player's range is condensed, the strength of their hands is concentrated within a narrow band, usually medium-strength holdings. For example, a preflop caller who only calls a continuation bet on the flop often has a range condensed to top pair, middle pair, or draws, and rarely contains very strong hands or pure bluffs.

Causes

A condensed range typically arises in the following scenarios:

  • Passive action lines: The player only calls on the flop, rather than raising or folding, eliminating both polarized strong hands (e.g., very strong made hands) and weak hands (e.g., complete misses).
  • Small pot control: When a player wants to control the size of the pot and avoid large pot risks, they call instead of raise, leading to a range concentrated on medium-strength hands.
  • Multi-way pots: In multi-way pots, players are more inclined to call with medium-strength hands rather than raise with marginal ones, thus forming a condensed range.

Strategic Significance

Identifying an opponent's condensed range helps adjust your attack strategy:

  • Frequent betting: Since the opponent lacks very strong hands, you can use a wider range to apply pressure with continuation bets on the turn and river.
  • Using blockers: Leverage blockers in your hand that block the opponent's possible draws or medium hands to increase the success rate of bluffs.
  • Adjusting value bets: With the opponent's range condensed, your medium-strong hands (e.g., top pair) have more stable value, allowing you to bet more aggressively for value.

Typical Example

Suppose on the flop a player calls your continuation bet on a wet board (e.g., J♠10♠9♥). Typically, their condensed range includes: top pair, middle pair, straight draws, flush draws, but almost never top two pair or a set (these would usually raise), nor pure air (which would fold). Therefore, you can bet many combos consecutively on the turn when a high card or a blank appears.
