In standard Seven-Card Stud, each player receives two hole cards (face-down) and one door card (face-up). The door card is significant because it is the only exposed card on the first betting round, giving opponents information about the player's potential hand strength.

The door card often determines the bring-in—the forced bet that starts the action. In most stud games, the player with the lowest door card (by rank, with ace considered low in Razz but high in traditional stud unless specified) must post the bring-in. If two players have the same rank, suits are used to break ties, typically in alphabetical order: clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades (or reverse). The bring-in is usually a small fraction of the full bet, and action proceeds clockwise from the bring-in.
