眼神接触马脚(Eye Contact Tell)

Eye Contact Tell

The act of inferring the strength of an opponent's hand or their intentions by observing abnormal changes in their eye contact, such as duration, avoidance behavior, etc.

Overview

Eye contact tell is one of the common nonverbal tells in poker, referring to how a player's eye contact patterns (e.g., staring, avoiding, rapid blinking) reveal hand strength or mental state when acting or facing a bet. Typically, players with strong hands or those bluffing will exhibit unusually prolonged staring or deliberate avoidance, while weak hands may naturally shift gaze.

Principle

  • Staring: Some players with strong hands or when preparing to bluff attempt to apply pressure through deliberate eye contact, or over-display confidence.
  • Avoidance: When holding weak hands or feeling uneasy, players may subconsciously avoid eye contact, fearing they will reveal information.
  • Abnormal behavior: Sudden changes in blink rate, pupil dilation (requires very close observation), or wandering eyes.

Application

  • Opponent patterns: First observe a player's default eye contact habits in regular hands (e.g., their gaze during casual conversation), then compare for abnormalities under table pressure.
  • Timing: Focus on a player's eye reaction on the river or after a large bet.
  • Limitations: High-level players may deliberately control their gaze or use reverse tells (e.g., intentionally avoiding eye contact to feign weakness).

Notes

  • Do not rely on this tell alone; combine it with bet sizing, action sequence, [pot odds], and other factors.
  • Not applicable in online poker; only for live games.
  • Avoid developing fixed eye contact habits yourself; remain natural.
