Fold Frequency
弃牌频率
### Fold Frequency Fold frequency refers to the percentage of times a player chooses to fold when facing a bet or raise, relative to their total number of decisions. It is a key indicator of how easily an opponent gives up pots. In practice, a high fold frequency means the opponent is sensitive to pressure, allowing you to frequently take down pots with bluffs or small bets; a low fold frequency suggests the opponent has a wide calling range, requiring you to bet with strong value hands. For example, if after a continuation bet on the flop the opponent folds twice out of three times, their fold frequency is about 67%, and you can increase your bluffing frequency. Conversely, if the opponent only folds once, you should tighten your range to avoid unnecessary losses.
Fold Frequency
Overview
Fold Frequency is a measure of a player's tendency to fold when facing an opponent's bet or raise. It is typically expressed as a percentage. For example, if a player folds 60 times out of 100 bets faced, his fold frequency is 60%.
Calculation and Significance
Fold frequency can be estimated from historical hand data or real-time observation. In Texas Hold'em, fold frequency is an important reference for strategy development. A high fold frequency means the player is likely to give up pots, allowing opponents to apply pressure through frequent bets and win more pots. A low fold frequency indicates the player tends to call or raise, requiring opponents to have stronger hands or adopt more cautious betting strategies.
Applications
- Exploitative Strategy: Against players with high fold frequency, increase bluffing frequency to exploit their folding tendency. Against players with low fold frequency, reduce bluffs and use more value bets with strong hands.
- Balanced Strategy: In GTO (Game Theory Optimal) strategy, players need to control their fold frequency to match their betting frequency, preventing exploitation by opponents. For example, facing a pot-sized bet, theoretically you need to fold about 33% of the time to remain indifferent to the opponent's bluffs.
- Range Construction: Fold frequency affects the opponent's calling range. High fold frequency means the opponent's calling range is stronger, so value bets require stronger hands.
Notes
Fold frequency is not an isolated metric; it should be evaluated in combination with other factors such as position, board texture, bet sizing, etc. Additionally, with insufficient sample size, fold frequency can be misleading.
