Overview

Fold to 4-Bet (abbreviated as F4B) is a metric in Texas Hold'em that measures a player's tendency to fold when facing a 4-Bet preflop. It reflects the strength of a player's defense against larger raises and is valuable for assessing an opponent's aggression and adjusting one's own strategy.

Calculation

This statistic is usually calculated by dividing the number of times a player folds to a 4-Bet preflop by the total number of times they face a 4-Bet. For example, if a player folds 7 times out of 10 instances of facing a 4-Bet, their Fold to 4-Bet is 70%.

Strategic Significance

  • High Fold Rate: Indicates that the player tends to give up when facing a 4-Bet. Opponents can exploit this tendency by 4-betting more frequently to steal pots. In this case, the player should adjust their 3-Bet Range to avoid being overly exploited.
  • Low Fold Rate: Suggests the player is inclined to fight back against 4-Bets, potentially holding strong hands or being willing to bluff. Opponents should reduce their 4-Bet frequency against this player and adopt a more cautious approach.

Influencing Factors

This metric is affected by a player's style, position, stack depth, and opponent image. Tight-aggressive players (TAG) typically have a lower Fold to 4-Bet because their 3-Bet Range is stronger; loose-aggressive players (LAG) may have a higher fold rate due to a wider range.

Application Scenarios

In opponent data analysis, Fold to 4-Bet is often used in conjunction with 3-Bet frequency and 4-Bet frequency. For instance, if an opponent has a high 3-Bet rate but also a high Fold to 4-Bet, it may indicate that their 3-Bet range includes many bluffs, making a 4-Bet a good counter. Conversely, if an opponent has a low 3-Bet rate and a low Fold to 4-Bet, their 3-Bet range is likely very strong, requiring caution.

Notes

The sample size needs to be large enough (typically at least 50 opportunities) for the statistic to be meaningful. Additionally, the standard for this metric may differ between tournaments and cash games, so it should be evaluated in conjunction with factors such as ICM.
