Fold to Steal from BTN

Fold to Steal from BTN

Fold to Steal from BTN Refers to the frequency with which a player folds when facing a steal raise from the button BTN while in the blinds, usually expressed as a percentage.

Overview

Fold to Steal from BTN (abbreviated as FTS vs BTN) is an important statistical metric in Texas Hold'em that measures the defensive aggressiveness of players in the blinds. This statistic reflects the probability that players in the small and big blinds will fold when the button (BTN) raises preflop in an attempt to steal the blinds.

Calculation

This metric is calculated in a specific scenario: only the button raises preflop (i.e., a steal attempt), and the small and big blinds are in position. The formula is:

  • Numerator: Number of folds when facing a steal raise from the button
  • Denominator: Total number of times facing a steal raise from the button

Poker tracking software typically calculates this statistic automatically, recording it separately for the big blind and small blind.

Strategic Significance

  • For the attacker (button): If an opponent's Fold to Steal from BTN is high (e.g., above 70%), the button player can steal more frequently and even raise with a wider range, as the opponent folds often.
  • For the defender (blinds): If your own FTS vs BTN is too high, you become an easy target. It's recommended to adjust your defensive strategy based on the opponent's steal frequency and range, for example, by using a wider range to 3-bet or call to protect your blinds.
  • Ideal range: Generally, a reasonable FTS vs BTN is around 40%-60% for the big blind and 50%-70% for the small blind, but this depends on game type, stack depth, and opponent tendencies.

Notes

This statistic should be analyzed in conjunction with other metrics (such as opponent's steal frequency, 3-bet tendency). Values can vary significantly depending on table dynamics; for example, in late tournament stages influenced by ICM, defensive tendencies may decrease.
