Fold to Steal from CO
Fold to Steal from CO
Term: Fold to Steal from CO Cutoff The frequency with which a player in the Cutoff folds when facing a steal raise from a later position such as the Button or Small Blind.
Overview
Fold to Steal from CO is an important Texas Hold'em statistical metric used to measure a player's defensive tendency when facing a steal attempt from a later position while in the cutoff (CO). It is typically tracked via HUD software, with the formula: Number of folds facing a steal raise from a later position / Total number of times facing a steal raise from a later position × 100%.
Typical Values and Interpretation
- Very High (>70%): The player is too weak in the CO, frequently folding to steals from later positions, making them exploitable. Later position players can steal with a wider range.
- Moderate (40%-60%): Balanced defensive frequency, balancing blind protection and avoiding over-calling.
- Very Low (<30%): The player defends too wide in the CO, often calling or re-raising, leading to unfavorable situations. Opponents can value bet with strong ranges.
Strategic Significance
This indicator reflects a player's blind defense strategy in the CO. The CO is after the button but still has positional advantage (relative to the blinds), so the ideal Fold to Steal should be lower than the small blind's (SB) but slightly higher than the button's (BTN). Adjustments should consider the opponent's stealing range: if the opponent steals frequently, lower the fold rate (e.g., by calling or 3-betting more loosely); if the opponent's stealing range is tight, increase the fold rate.
Limitations
This metric ignores specific hand strength and historical dynamics. For example, a player might only defend with strong hands, leading to a statistically high fold rate but actual profitability. Additionally, data with too small a sample size is meaningless.
