e., the third seat to the right of the button BTN. This position, being close to the button and in the middle-late area, is often used to "hijack" the button's advantage by raising or re-raising to seize initiative. In practice, Hijack players can use position advantage to control the pot post-flop, steal blinds with a wider range, or isolate weak players, while needing to be wary of re-raises from the button and blinds. It is a key position for balancing aggression and defense.
Position Overview
[Hijack] (HJ) is an important middle position in Texas Hold'em. In a standard 6-max table, the position order is: [UTG], Hijack (HJ), [Cutoff] (CO), Button (BTN), Small Blind (SB), Big Blind (BB). In a full ring (9-handed) table, the Hijack typically refers to the UTG+2 position (i.e., the second position after UTG).
Position Characteristics
The Hijack is a middle-to-late position with the following features:
- Information advantage: Compared to UTG, the Hijack can observe more players' actions, but still has less information than the Cutoff and Button.
- Steal opportunities: When it folds to the Hijack, you can attempt to raise to steal the blinds, especially if the blinds are tight.
- 3-bet range: The Hijack's raising range is typically wider than UTG's but tighter than the Cutoff's. A typical range includes all pairs, suited connectors, A-high hands, etc.
Strategy Points
- Opening range: In 6-max, the Hijack's first-in raising range usually covers about 20%-25% of hands, including: all pairs (22+), A9s+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, and AJo+, KQo+, etc.
- Facing a 3-bet: When facing a 3-bet from the Hijack, you need to adjust your defense frequency based on the opponent's range. Typically, strong hands (such as TT+, AQ+) are used to 4-bet, while some medium-strength hands call.
- Isolation raise: When there are multiple limpers, the Hijack can use a wider range to raise and isolate, leveraging positional advantage.
Relationship with Other Positions
The Hijack acts as a bridge between early and late positions. Post-flop, the Hijack is usually in a middle position and needs to make decisions based on board texture and opponent ranges.
Example
In a 6-max game with blinds 100/200, the Hijack holds A♠K♠, all players before fold, and the Hijack raises to 600. This is a standard value raise.
