HJ Position Overview

HJ (Hijack) is located after UTG and before CO, making it a middle position. Since its position is not the worst but not great either, preflop strategy must balance tight-aggressive play with range balancing.

Definition of 4-Bet

A 4-bet refers to the action of re-raising after an initial raise (2-bet) and a 3-bet preflop. A 4-bet typically indicates a strong hand or a polarized range, aiming to force opponents to fold out of position or to build a pot for value.

Core Strategy

The HJ's strategy in a 4-bet pot considers the following factors:

• Opponent's 3-bet range: If opponents in late position (e.g., BTN, SB) 3-bet wide, HJ should increase 4-bet bluffs (e.g., A5s, KQo) to counter. If opponents' 3-bet range is tight (e.g., only QQ+, AK), then only 4-bet with strong hands like KK+ and AK.
• Stack depth: With deep stacks (>100BB), you can increase 4-bet bluffs and control sizing (around 2.2-2.5x the 3-bet) for better postflop play. With short stacks (<40BB), prefer all-in or small-sized polarized 4-bets.
• Position disadvantage: HJ is relatively out of position postflop, so 4-bet sizes should be large enough (usually 2.5-3x the 3-bet) to deny opponents' positional advantage and implied odds.
• Range balancing: To avoid being exploited, maintain an appropriate ratio between value hands (KK+, AK) and bluff hands (e.g., A5s, 76s), typically around 1:1 to 2:1.

Typical Range Examples

• Value 4-bet: KK+, AK (sometimes QQ, JJ depending on opponent).
• Bluff 4-bet: Hands with blockers, such as Axs (especially A5s-A9s), KQs, JTs, etc., or small pairs (e.g., 55-77) for balancing.

Notes

• Avoid over-4-betting, especially against tight-passive players, as it easily exposes your range.
• If opponents have a very high fold-to-4-bet rate, you can widen your bluff range; otherwise, tighten up.
• In multi-way pots, 4-bets should lean more towards value, as bluff success rates decrease.
