HJ 50bb Steal
In no-limit Texas Hold'em, when a player in the HJ Hijack position has about 50 big blinds, a strategy of raising to try to win the blinds and antes directly.
Position and Stack Depth
HJ (Hijack) is the position one before CO (Cutoff) on a nine-handed table, belonging to the middle-late positions. A 50BB stack is medium depth; at this depth, steal strategies need to balance value and risk.
Core Considerations for Stealing
- Opponent Ranges: HJ raises primarily target the blinds (SB and BB). If the blinds have a high fold-to-steal rate (e.g., tight or insensitive to steals), the success rate of stealing increases.
- Pot Odds: For example, raising to 2.5BB with a 50BB stack requires the blinds' combined fold equity of roughly 40%+ to be directly profitable. In practice, you must also account for subsequent play if opponents call or 3-bet.
- Range Construction: A typical steal range includes medium-strong hands (e.g., 77+, AT+) and some bluffs (e.g., suited connectors). At 50BB depth, avoid widening the range too much to prevent trouble when facing a 3-bet.
- Postflop Strategy: If called, use positional advantage postflop and choose c-bet or check based on board structure. Frequent stealing may invite opponents to adjust with re-steals.
Example Scenario
Nine-handed table, blinds 100/200. You are in HJ with A♠5♠, stack 10,000 (50BB). All previous players fold. You raise to 500. If SB and BB fold, you win the pot of 300 plus any antes immediately. If BB calls, consider a continuation bet on the flop.
Notes
- Frequency Control: Over-stealing can be exploited by opponents. Adjust based on hand strength and table dynamics.
- Opponent Types: Reduce stealing against loose-aggressive players; increase stealing against tight-passive players.
- Tournament Factors: Under ICM pressure, be more cautious with steals, especially near the money bubble.
