HJ on Wet Turn

Refers to the strategies and action considerations for a player in the Hijack HJ position when facing a wet turn board multiple drawing possibilities.

Overview

In Texas Hold'em, HJ (Hijack) is the position after UTG and before Cutoff (CO) on a nine-handed table. "Wet Turn" refers to when the turn card makes the board texture highly coordinated, creating multiple possibilities for straights or flush draws (e.g., a flop of 8♦7♠2♣ and a turn of 6♣, resulting in 8♦7♠2♣6♣, offering straight draws like 9-5 and 5-4, as well as flush draws).

Position and Board Analysis

HJ is a middle-to-late position, acting before the flop but without the positional advantage of CO or BTN. On a wet turn, both your range and your opponent's range need reevaluation. A wet board favors ranges that have made hands or draws on the flop, and may render some previously strong hands (like top pair top kicker) vulnerable, as opponents may aggressively raise with draws.

Strategic Points

  • Range Construction: On a wet turn, continuation bets (C-Bet) should include value hands (e.g., straights, top pair or better) and draws (e.g., overpair with a flush draw) to balance the range. Pure air hands should not be bet, as they risk being raised.
  • Check-Raise/Check-Call: If you raised preflop and the turn is wet, consider check-raising with strong hands as a trap, or check-calling with draws for pot control.
  • Counter-Strategies: If the opponent shows weakness, you can semi-bluff with draws. If they raise frequently, tighten your range and continue only with made hands or strong draws.

Example Scenario

Suppose HJ raises preflop, and BTN calls. The flop is A♠9♠3♣. HJ bets, BTN calls. The turn is J♠ (creating a backdoor flush and straight possibility). At this point, HJ should consider: with A♦K♦ (top pair top kicker), continue betting for value, but be cautious if raised; with K♠Q♠ (flush draw + gutshot straight draw), check-call or semi-bluff.

Summary

The core of HJ on a Wet Turn lies in balancing value and bluffs, using positional advantage to control the pot. Players should adjust flexibly based on opponent tendencies, stack depth, and board texture, avoiding being overly aggressive or overly passive on wet boards.
