HJ Preflop Isolation Raise Dry

Preflop raise from the hijack HJ position facing a limper, intended to isolate the opponent, with no other raises in the pot i.e., "dry" state.

Concept

HJ Preflop Isolation Raise Dry refers to a preflop action where a player in the Hijack position (one seat to the right of the cutoff) raises to isolate weak players when the pot contains only one or more limpers and no other raises or reraises. The term "Dry" emphasizes that the pot has not yet been filled with significant dead money — i.e., no one has raised, leaving a "dry" state. It may also implicitly suggest an expectation of a dry flop structure, but this is not mandatory.

Purpose and Strategy

The core objectives of this action are twofold:

  • Isolate weak players: By raising, the HJ forces the blinds and other yet-to-act players to fold, creating a heads-up situation with the limper(s). This leverages positional advantage (HJ is in a favorable position postflop) and hand strength to dominate the opponent.
  • Seize initiative: The raise signals a strong range, forcing the limper(s) into a passive defensive posture, while potentially winning the dead money (blinds and limpers' chips) outright.

Typical scenario: When the HJ holds a playable hand (e.g., middle pair, suited connectors, or big-card combos) and judges the limpers' ranges to be weak, this raise is executed. The raise size is usually 3–4 big blinds plus an additional 1 big blind per limper.

Notes

  • Against multiple limpers, the raise amount must be increased accordingly; otherwise, isolation may fail.
  • If the blinds contain aggressive players, this raise may face a re-raise, so frequency should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies.
  • "Dry" in this context emphasizes a simple pot dynamic, but postflop strategy must still adapt to the board texture.
