HJ River 3-Bet Pot
HJ River 3-Bet Pot
Term: HJ River 3-Bet Pot Refers to the situation or strategy where the Hijack player plays on the river in a pot that was formed after a 3-bet pre-flop.
Background
The hijack (HJ) is the position to the right of under-the-gun (UTG) in a full-ring game, classified as a middle position. Preflop, after the HJ player opens, they face a 3-bet from a later position (e.g., cutoff CO or button BTN). At this point, the pot size is roughly 2.5-3 times the initial pot, forming a 3-bet pot.
River Characteristics
In a 3-bet pot on the river, the board range is typically narrow, and both players' ranges are relatively polarized. The HJ player, as the preflop raiser, is usually out of position in a 3-bet pot (if the later player is the 3-bettor) or in position (if the HJ themselves is the 3-bettor). Generally, "HJ River 3-Bet Pot" refers to the HJ being out of position in a 3-bet pot (i.e., facing a 3-bet from a later position) and reaching the river.
Typical Strategy
- Range Assessment: The HJ's call or fold decision on the river mainly depends on the opponent's 3-bet range and bet size. Since both ranges in a 3-bet pot are strong, the HJ should primarily defend with medium-strength made hands (e.g., top pair top kicker) to avoid over-folding.
- Bluffing and Value: If the HJ holds the nuts or a strong hand, consider raising or shoving; if bluffing, weigh the opponent's fold equity. Typically, river bet sizes in 3-bet pots are large (75%-100% pot), so bluff success rates are lower.
- Hand Reading: Note the opponent's actions on the flop and turn, such as check-call or check-raise, to infer their river hand strength.
Common Mistakes
Beginners often over-fold on the river in 3-bet pots, especially against continuation bets. In reality, the HJ's calling range on the river should include some medium pairs and weak hands resulting from flush draws to counter the opponent's frequency exploitation.
Example
(Example) Assume preflop HJ opens to 3BB, BTN 3-bets to 9BB, HJ calls. Flop A♠K♣7♥, both check. Turn 5♦, BTN bets 12BB, HJ calls. River 2♣, BTN bets 25BB into a 40BB pot. In this situation, if the HJ holds KQ, they should consider calling, as the BTN could have AK/AQ or a bluff.
