Poker Term

劫持位河牌湿润诈唬(HJ River Bluff Wet)

On the river, when the board texture is wet multiple drawing possibilities exist, a bluff initiated by the hijack position player.

Term Explanation

HJ River Bluff Wet describes a strategy where a player in the Hijack (HJ, the position one seat to the left of the under-the-gun) bluffs on the river with a wet board. A wet board typically has possible straights or flushes, e.g., 9♠8♠7♥ or A♥K♥Q♥, where many draws could have completed by the river.

Key Strategy Points

  • Positional Advantage: The HJ is a middle-to-late position, so on the river the player can still observe actions from later positions, but must be cautious of the Button (BTN) and blinds. On a wet board, players in later positions are more likely to hold made hands or draws, reducing bluff success.
  • Range Considerations: The bluffer must balance their range, ensuring they also have some value hands (e.g., top pair, two pair) on wet boards; otherwise opponents can easily exploit them. Typical bluffing hands include missed draws (e.g., missed straight or flush draws) or hands with blockers (e.g., holding the A♠ to block the nut flush).
  • Board Texture and Bet Size: Wet boards usually require larger bet sizes (e.g., 75%-100% of the pot) to force opponents to fold their bluff-catchers. Also beware of check-raise bluffs.

Example

Assume a No-Limit Hold'em game with effective stacks of 100BB. Preflop: HJ raises to 3BB, big blind calls. Flop: J♠T♠9♦ (wet board with straight and flush draws). Big blind checks, HJ bets half pot, big blind calls. Turn: 3♣, big blind checks, HJ bets two-thirds pot, big blind calls. River: 5♥. Final board: J♠T♠9♦3♣5♥ – still possible for a straight (KQ, Q8, etc.) but no flush. Big blind checks. HJ considers bluffing: if holding A♠Q♠ (a missed flush draw that blocks the nut flush), a large bet representing a made hand could force the opponent to fold middle pair or weak pair.

Notes

Bluff success rate on wet boards is lower because opponents often have many made hands. It is recommended to bluff when the opponent's range is weak, their fold equity is high, or you have blockers. Over-bluffing can be easily exploited by skilled players.
