HJ River Heads-Up Pot

HJ River Heads-Up Pot

Term: HJ River Heads-Up Pot Refers to a heads-up pot entered by the HJ Hijack player and another player preflop, resulting in a heads-up confrontation on the river.

Position and Scenario

HJ (Hijack) is the position two seats to the right of the button in a full-ring game, typically with a wide raising range preflop. When the HJ player raises and only the blinds or one player in late position calls, a heads-up pot is formed. By the river, only two players remain in the pot, referred to as an "HJ River Heads-Up Pot."

Strategy Features

In this situation, the HJ player is usually in position (if a late-position player calls, they are out of position). Since HJ's preflop range is wide, river decisions need to incorporate the opponent's range and pot odds. General advice:

  • If the HJ player is in position (e.g., blinds call), use the positional advantage for thin value bets or bluffs.
  • If the HJ player is out of position (e.g., small blind or big blind calls – though blinds calling is more common, the exact positional relationship requires specific analysis), be more cautious and avoid over-bluffing.

Common Mistakes

Many players over-bluff from the HJ, allowing opponents to easily call them down. In heads-up pots, the opponent's range is usually tighter, so value betting should be favored over bluffing.
