HJ River Multiway Pot

HJ River Multiway Pot

Term: HJ River Multiway Pot Refers to a situation on the river where the Hijack HJ player is involved and at least three players remain in the pot.

Position and Scenario

HJ (Hijack, 劫持位) is the position immediately to the right of CO (Cutoff, 关煞位), typically after the under-the-gun position in a 6-max game. When the HJ player enters the pot preflop, and multiple players call or raise postflop, eventually reaching the river, it forms a "HJ River Multiway Pot". Multiway Pot refers to at least three players still in the hand. Because pot odds are more complex, bluff success rates decrease, and the value bet range needs to be tightened.

Strategy Points

  • Range Adjustment: In the river of a multiway pot, HJ should mainly hold made hands (e.g., top pair or better), avoid bluffing because the probability of multiple callers is high.
  • Position Disadvantage: HJ is usually in a middle position (not the button) on the river, and the action order requires considering the reactions of players behind. If HJ is the last to act, they can increase value bets appropriately; if in the middle, they need to be more cautious.
  • Bet Sizing: In a multiway pot, the bet amount should consider the pot size and opponent ranges. Typically, a value bet is 50%-75% of the pot to extract value from weaker made hands.

Common Mistakes

  • Excessive Bluffing: In multiway pots, bluff success rate is extremely low unless there are clear blockers or opponent ranges show weakness.
  • Ignoring Board Texture: If the board has straight or flush possibilities, HJ should bet cautiously to avoid being re-raised.

Example

6-max, HJ holds K♠K♦, raises preflop, BTN and BB call. Flop K♣8♥2♠ (no flush draw), HJ bets, both call. Turn 7♣, HJ bets, BTN folds, BB calls. River 3♠, pot is large. BB might have middle pair or missed flush draw. HJ should value bet because no flush draw completed, KT top pair is still strong. If the river were 9♠ (possibly completing a straight and a flush), then check should be considered because BB might hold J♠T♠.
