Term Explanation

HJ (HiJack) typically refers to the position UTG+1 in a 6-max game or UTG+2 in a 9-max game, sitting in the middle-late region. On the river, if the community board pairs (e.g., a pair already existed on the flop or turn, or the river card itself pairs the board), the board texture changes, potentially altering hand strength distribution. In this scenario, a HJ player holding a strong made hand (such as top pair top kicker, overpair, or trips) can consider a value bet.

Strategy Points

  • Impact of a Paired Board: A paired board eliminates certain draws (e.g., straight draws) and increases the concealment of hands like full houses. The HJ's value bet should assess the opponent's calling range, which often includes weaker two pairs, middle pairs, or top pair with a weaker kicker.
  • Range Construction: The HJ may have a wide preflop range, but on a paired board, value bets should focus on hands at least top pair or better, avoiding over-betting that could allow opponents to check-raise or raise.
  • Bet Sizing: Typical bet size is 50%-75% of the pot, adjusted based on opponent's looseness. If the opponent tends to fold, reduce sizing; if the opponent calls widely, increase sizing.
  • Example: Suppose the board is K♠9♣9♦ on the flop, 7♥ on the turn, and 2♣ on the river. The HJ holds K♥Q♠. On the river with a paired board (pair of nines), a value bet can be made, expecting the opponent to call with hands like Kx with a weaker kicker or 9x.

Notes

  • Avoid betting when the opponent may hold a full house or a stronger hand; analyze opponent's actions.
  • If the paired board also completes a flush or straight, proceed cautiously, as the opponent's made hand could be stronger.
