UTG opening range
UTG opening range
Term: UTG opening range Refers to the range of hands a player in the UTG (Under the Gun, the first position to the left of the big blind) chooses to open-raise with during pre-flop action.
Context: Term article: UTG opening range
UTG is one of the most disadvantageous positions in Texas Hold'em, as the player acts first post-flop with several opponents still to act behind. Therefore, the UTG opening range is typically tight, consisting mainly of premium hands such as high pairs (TT+, i.e., tens and above), strong A-high hands (AK, AQ, etc.), and some suited connectors (e.g., AJs, KQs). The specific range adjusts based on table dynamics, stack depth, opponent tendencies, and other factors. In cash games, a typical UTG opening range comprises roughly 8–12% of all hands; in tournaments, it becomes more conservative due to ICM considerations. Constructing a sound UTG opening range is key to balancing value hands and bluffs, while also accounting for the risk of being 3-bet by later-position players.
