The Button Calling Station Leak refers to a situation in Texas Hold'em where a player on the button exhibits typical calling station characteristics—tending to passively call with a wide range rather than raising or folding. Opponents can exploit this by targeting the leak. The leak primarily stems from the calling station's lack of aggression and insensitivity to hand strength evaluation.
Leak Principle
- Position Disadvantage: Although the button is the best position, calling station players often over-call, losing their positional advantage. Opponents can isolate with raises or apply constant pressure with continuation bets, forcing them into a passive state.
- Overly Wide Range: Calling stations frequently call medium-strength bets post-flop, allowing opponents to cheaply realize equity and profit more from bluffs or value bets on the turn or river.
- Lack of Raises: Calling stations rarely raise, so opponents can comfortably bet marginal hands in position without fear of being re-raised.
Exploitation Methods
- Increase Bluff Frequency: Continuation bet on flop, turn, and river, especially on non-threatening board textures. Calling stations may call with weak pairs or draws but fold to large bets.
- Thin Value Betting: Bet with top pair medium kicker or even thinner value hands, as calling stations will call with worse holdings.
- Isolation Raises: If the calling station is loose-passive, raise with a wider range from the button to isolate them heads-up.
Considerations
- Calling stations occasionally hit strong hands; reduce bluffing when the board texture strongly correlates with their range.
- This leak is less effective against tight-passive calling stations, as they fold more frequently.
