Poker Term

枪口位开池频率(UTG Open-Raise Frequency)

Refers to the percentage of time a player in the under-the-gun UTG position opens with a raise pre-flop in a full-ring game.

The UTG (Under the Gun) opening frequency is a key metric for measuring a player's aggression from the earliest position. Due to positional disadvantage, UTG players typically have the tightest hand range and the lowest opening frequency.

Influencing Factors

  • Table Dynamics: At a tight-passive table, UTG can moderately loosen their opening range; at an aggressive table, they should tighten up.
  • Stack Depth: With deep stacks, consider opening with more speculative hands; with short stacks, lean toward high-quality hands.
  • Opponent Style: Against opponents who 3-bet frequently, UTG opening frequency should be reduced.

Typical Range

Generally, a solid UTG opening frequency is around 10%-15%, corresponding to hands including:

  • Pairs: 77+ (some players include 66)
  • Suited connectors: AQs+, KQs+ (high suited connectors)
  • Offsuit: AQo+, AKo
  • Some players add ATs+, KJs+, etc.

Strategic Implications

  • Balance Range: Maintain some bluff opens (e.g., A5s) to avoid being exploited.
  • Against LAG Players: Slightly reduce frequency to avoid getting into trouble after being 3-bet.
  • Adjustment Basis: If opponents fold too often to UTG opens, increase frequency; otherwise, tighten.

Common Mistakes

  • Believing UTG must play extremely tight; actually, adjustments should be made based on opponents.
  • Ignoring positional disadvantage and frequently opening with marginal hands.
