Poker Term
枪口位开池范围(Under the Gun UTG Open Range)
Refers to the range of hands that a player uses to open-raise from the under-the-gun position the first position to the left of the big blind.
Position Characteristics
UTG is the first to act on a nine-handed or six-handed table, putting it in the worst position post-flop. Therefore, its opening range is typically the tightest and strongest.
Typical Range
- Nine-handed table: Usually includes about 10%-15% of hands, such as:
- Six-handed table: Slightly wider range, about 15%-20%, such as:
- Pairs (77+)
- All suited Aces (A2s+)
- Suited connectors (T9s+)
- Strong offsuit Aces (ATo+)
Influencing Factors
- Player style: Tight-aggressive (TAG) players have a tighter range; loose-aggressive (LAG) may add more speculative hands.
- Opponent tendencies: If the blinds defend weakly, you can loosen up; if 3-betting is frequent, tighten.
- Stack depth: Deep stacks allow adding more speculative hands like suited connectors; short stacks focus more on strong hands.
- Tournament stage: Late in tournaments, due to blind pressure, the range may widen significantly.
Strategy Tips
- Lacking positional advantage from UTG, focus on value hands; avoid marginal hands that could get trapped after a re-raise.
- Consider fold equity: If the blinds fold often, you can occasionally steal, but still choose playable hands.
- Pay attention to balance: Avoid a too-predictable range; mix in some weaker hands (e.g., A2s) to confuse opponents.
