Overview

Light Open Adjustment refers to a strategy where a player, when opening the pot with a raise preflop, does not mechanically use a fixed range but dynamically adjusts the width of their opening range based on specific situations. The core concept lies in "light" — not always using a wide range, but intentionally deviating from a standard range (such as a common "tight-aggressive" or "loose-aggressive" baseline) under certain conditions to achieve exploitative or defensive goals.

Adjustment Factors

  • Opponent Tendencies: If opponents in the blinds frequently fold (over-fold to steals), you can widen your opening range and steal with more marginal hands. Conversely, if opponents defend often (3-bet or wide defense), tighten your range to reduce exploitation.
  • Stack Depth: With deep stacks (>100BB), you can slightly widen your opening range to apply pressure using position and stack advantage. With short stacks (<30BB), tighten your range to avoid marginal postflop spots with weak hands.
  • Position: Early position (UTG) typically uses a narrow range, but if the table is passive, you can light open a few hands. Button (BTN) and CO already have wider ranges, leaving more room for adjustment.
  • Table Dynamics: When overall fold rates are high or players are generally passive, you can make light opening adjustments (i.e., "steal mode"). If the table is aggressive with frequent 3-bets, shrink your range to avoid frequent squeezes.

Typical Scenario Examples

  • Button vs Weak Blinds: If both blinds fold more than 70% of the time, the button can light open about 50% of hands, including non-standard hands like T8o or 96o, aiming to directly steal the blinds.
  • Against High 3-Bet Frequency: If a blind player 3-bets the CO open more than 12%, fold marginal hands like AT or KJ, and only open strong hands like JJ+ and AK to avoid being forced into a passive spot after a 3-bet.

Notes

Light open adjustment is not about mindlessly widening your range; it must be combined with specific opponent tendencies and your own stack. Over-adjusting can leave your range too weak, allowing smart opponents to reverse exploit you. Good players make small exploitative adjustments based on live information, starting from a GTO baseline range.
