In practice, a mixed strategy is used to balance your range and avoid being read by opponents, especially on the river or against strong opponents, effectively protecting your bluffs and value hands. For example, when holding a flush draw on the flop, you check 70% of the time and bet 30% of the time, so opponents cannot determine whether you are drawing or have already made a hand, thereby reducing their counter-play efficiency.

Mixed strategy is a core concept in game theory and is widely applied in Texas Hold'em. Unlike a pure strategy (always choosing the same action), a mixed strategy requires a player to randomize their actions according to a specific probability distribution—for example, betting 70% of the time and checking 30% of the time in a given situation. The goal is to prevent opponents from accurately predicting your next move by observing past actions, thereby protecting your strategy from being exploited.
Application in Poker
In Texas Hold'em, optimal strategies are often mixed. For instance, on the river, if you always bet with strong hands and check with weak hands, opponents can easily fold or raise to exploit you. By employing a mixed strategy, you can check some strong hands (slow play) or bet with some weak hands (bluff), making your opponents' decisions difficult. GTO (Game Theory Optimal) strategies typically require mixed strategies to achieve Nash equilibrium, where no unilateral change in strategy can improve expected payoff.
Implementation
Mixed strategies are usually implemented using random number generators or psychological randomization. Players can preset ratios—for example, when continuation betting on the flop, they might bet 80% of the time with top pair or better and check 20%; with draws, they might bet 30% and check 70%. In actual gameplay, players need to adjust mixed ratios based on opponent tendencies, but deviating from GTO mixed strategies can be exploited by experienced opponents.
Comparison with Pure Strategy
Pure strategies are simple and straightforward but are easily read by opponents. Mixed strategies add uncertainty but require precise frequency control and opponent modeling. In low-stakes games, pure strategies may be more effective since opponents rarely exploit them accurately; in high-stakes competition, mixed strategies are key to maintaining unpredictability.
