MP 10bb Resteal
In Texas Hold'em, when a player is in middle position MP with a stack of about 10 big blinds, the strategy of making a 3-bet re-raise against an opponent's blind-stealing raise.
Concept Explanation
MP 10bb Resteal is an aggressive counter-strategy for short stacks (approximately 10bb) in middle position. When a player has a shallow stack (e.g., 10bb), their action range is usually limited, but using a resteal can punish opponents who frequently steal blinds, increasing fold equity and accumulating chips.
Applicable Scenarios
- Opponent Profile: Opponents who often make steal-raises from late positions like CO or BTN and have a high fold-to-3-bet rate.
- Hand Requirements: Typically requires playable hands such as medium pairs (77-99), suited connectors (A5s, KQo), etc. These hands have reasonable equity against an opponent's steal range and can continue post-flop if called.
- Position Factor: MP is relatively early. After restealing, if the opponent 4-bet shoves, you must decide whether to call based on pot odds.
Notes
- With a 10bb stack, the 3-bet size is usually a shove or near-shove (e.g., raising to about 2.5-3bb, but in most cases, directly shoving is more effective) to avoid giving small stacks room to maneuver.
- Frequency Control: Overusing resteals allows opponents to adjust, so it must be combined with specific opponents and dynamics.
- ICM Impact: Near the money bubble or final table in tournaments, consider ICM pressure to avoid unnecessary risks.
Example
Assume blinds are 500/1000, MP player has 10000 chips (10bb). CO raises to 2200, MP holds A5s. MP can choose to shove all-in for 10000, forcing CO to fold or call. If CO folds, MP steals the pot and gains about 3200 chips; if CO calls, they go to a flop showdown.
Summary
MP 10bb Resteal is an effective weapon for short-stacked players in middle position to balance their range and counter steals. However, timing and hand selection must be careful to avoid being exploited by opponents.
