MP 20bb Bubble Play

In the bubble stage of a Texas Hold'em tournament, the decision strategy for a player in middle position with about 20 big blinds, emphasizing balancing survival and applying pressure.

Overview

MP 20bb Bubble Play is a critical scenario during the tournament bubble phase. Middle Position (MP) typically refers to the position after early position and before the cutoff (CO). On a nine-handed table, this corresponds to UTG+1 and UTG+2. 20 big blinds (bb) is considered a medium-short stack. The bubble phase is the moment when only a few eliminations remain before reaching the money.

Core Strategy

Due to the influence of ICM (Independent Chip Model) during the bubble, chips are valued higher than their nominal face value, and players tend to avoid all-in risks, especially those that could lead to elimination. As MP with 20bb, your opening range should be relatively tight, typically choosing about 15%–20% of strong hands (e.g., 77+, AT+, KQ, etc.) and raising to 2–2.5bb. When facing a 3bet from players behind (especially big stacks), decide whether to 4bet all-in or fold based on opponent tendencies and ICM pressure.

Key Considerations

  • Positional Disadvantage: After MP, players in CO, BU (button), and the blinds still have to act. The risk of opening increases when many players are yet to act.
  • Stack Depth: 20bb is enough for a few raises, but after a 4bet all-in, there is little room left. Therefore, avoid unnecessary confrontations with very short stacks or big stacks.
  • ICM Pressure: During the bubble, small stacks (<10bb) are desperate to double up, while big stacks (>50bb) can apply pressure. Medium stacks need to balance protecting their chips with stealing blinds.

Example

Bubble phase, blinds 500/1000, ante 100. MP has 20,000 chips (20bb) and holds AJo. Typically, you should open-raise to 2,200. However, if a big stack behind you frequently 3bets, you may consider folding or shoving. If CO, a small stack, shoves for about 8bb, calling with AJo is reasonable because their range is wider.

Notes

There is no fixed formula for this scenario; it requires dynamic adjustments. Tight players can tighten further, while against aggressive opponents, moderate counterattacks may be appropriate. Remember that the core goal during the bubble is to survive until the money, but do not fold so often that you blind out.
